Event Picture:
Far infrared reflectivity (FIR) and Time Domain Terahertz Transmission Spectroscopy (TTDT) have been used to study lattice vibrations in single crystalline rutile TiO2 in the 10-300K temperature range for frequencies between 0.3-20 THz (10-650 cm-1). The complex dielectric function can be determined by simultaneously fitting the FIR and TTDT data to a factorized dielectric function. The transverse A2u mode and the lowest of the three Eu modes are found to soften on cooling in a manner consistent with previous measurements of the static permittivity tensor.
