Quantum engineering is used in this work to design unconventional potentials that confine collective plasmonic modes in a semiconductor. Our approach has been enabled by a fully quantum treatment, which goes well beyond commonly employed electromagnetic models as it includes size confinement and tunneling. We have experimentally observed that new mid-infrared resonances of the collective response arise in a step well.
