In this paper, a surface plasmon polariton (SPP) driven terahertz backward wave oscillator (BWO) is presented. The localized surface wave of SPPs can be adopted for BWOs to achieve terahertz high power radiation in micrometer-scale. The proposed SPP driven BWO can be operated in the range of 0.4-0.6 THz. Particle-in-cell simulation shows that the BWO has an output power of 0.6 W at 0.5 THz. The localized SPP can contribute to the miniaturization of vacuum electronic device and integration of terahertz power sources.
