J. Martyn Chamberlain

1946-2026

Martyn Chamberlain was a British experimental physicist and academic.  He taught at several universities including the University of Nottingham, University of Leeds, and most recently from 2003 to 2011 (when he retired), at Durham University as the fourth Master of Grey College, where he was also chair in Applied Physics. He continued his association with the Department of Physics as Professor Emeritus.

In the Department of Physics, Martyn established the Terahertz Physics Group as part of the Photonic Materials Institute, undertaking work as part of the European Union’s TeraNova consortium, but also in collaboration with other industrial and government partners. Over time, this expanded to working with colleagues in engineering to develop artificial materials for the manipulation of terahertz light.
